Rectors Ramblings
Do you believe in angels?
My mother in law did – and they featured strongly in her recent funeral. For Margaret, her connection with God came through angels and she was not slow at sharing her beliefs and experiences. Many people loath to talk about angels because they think they won’t be believed, or that others will think angels aren’t real, or are not scriptural.
But there are hundreds of references to angels in the Bible and we used just one of them in Margaret’s service, along with Psalm 23. On the 29th September each year, the church remembers Michael and All Angels and I look forward to sharing that festival – and some of the myriad of angel stories in the Bible – with you in 2023 or 2024.
This week, however, we will hear from Habakkuk, including that beautiful verse: “the righteous live by their faith.” We will be encouraged to hang onto our faith to sustain us during difficult days – and we all have those at times. For Margaret, faith was manifested through picturing her angels next to her, guiding her. For others it might be clutching a hold-ing cross in the palm of their hand and for others it might be the person of Jesus as seen by Zacchaeus in today’s Gospel. In one of my really difficult times, my image of God was a huge ball of cotton wool. Perhaps I’ll tell you that story one day. The point is that, if we are just listening, God will be revealed to us in many ways: through scripture, through worship, through the Eucharist, and through a personal way that makes sense to each of us. May you be aware of God’s presence in your life today
